Dear Letters Editor
Animals bred for their flesh, milk and eggs are capable of feeling pain and suffering yet the majority are reared in intensive factory farms where they are kept inside huge, barren units for the whole of their short lives. They are denied fresh air, proper exercise and the freedom to carry out their natural behaviour. The boredom and stress of living in crowded conditions often causes them to injure each other. To try to prevent this, farmed animals are subjected to mutilations, such as beak trimming and the removal of their tails, without anaesthetic. At just a few weeks or months old, all farmed animals face a terrifying death at the slaughterhouse. Forcing animals to live within close proximity to one another provides the perfect breeding ground for viruses and bacteria. The illnesses they suffer from very often end up affecting the people who eat them, making large numbers ill and even causing many human fatalities. In recent years, animal farming has brought us BSE, bovine TB, foot and mouth, bird flu, swine flu, campylobacter, salmonella and many more devastating diseases.
